It's Monday! What are you reading? #7

The problem with Mondays.... Endless. I was actually looking forward to Monday, but then BAM - it just smacks you in the face with all its demands and oh-here's-another-problem at 08:00 on a Monday morning. But I don't hate Monday. I honestly don't. At least not the part where we can talk about books.

We took a mini-break last week and I spend it reading. The whole time. Came to the conclusion that reading really does solve everything and it's the best therapy. Monday should try reading. We as readers and bloggers should unite and force the world to spend Mondays reading. It will solve an endless amount of world problems. So nice to still believe in unicorns and the tooth fairy. Don't you think?

The Serial Killer's Daughter by Lesley Welsh You get serial killers. And then you get Don. Jeez... This was a good read. So sad that the author passed away earlier this year. I'm sure we could have expected a few more great reads from her. Review
Weeping Waters by Karin Brynard - I am binding myself to the promise to read more Afrikaans books. The Afrikaans title is "Plaasmoord" and it translates to Farm Murder. Something that is unfortunately very real and happening in South Africa. But don't judge the book only by it's title. This was a real page turner and it is available in English as well. Review to follow.
Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty - My favorite read for last week. This was a therapy session all wrapped into one book. Review to follow.

Dubbelspel deur Wilna Adriaanse - Another Afrikaans book. No English translation, yet. Hopefully. This book involves another sad reality in South Africa - organised crime syndicates.
Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult - Just started with it, can't really give an opinion yet. I tend to have a love/hate relationship with Jodi Picoult. But I believe this one will be one of the love ones.

Cross my heart, hope to read

I've created a new shelf on my Goodreads Profile called Monthly Reads. Maybe it will help to get me a bit more organized with my monthly reading schedules. I still have the following books lined up for June:

My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier - I have a joint-review scheduled with Katherine from I wish I lived in a library on the 29th of June. I have a 1951 edition of this novel to read from and hope to start this week!
American Gods by Neil Gaiman - TBR list #522, need to read this before my husband discovers it on Netflix.
A Sky Full of Stars by Melissa Josias - South African author I stumbled on on Amazon.
Hushed by Joanne Macgregor - Cary over from May.

Will I get to all of them? Most probably not. But this shelf on Goodreads will be a constant reminder.

What have you been up to this week? Any new books I really should know about?

This post links up with the weekly feature It's Monday! Brought to you by The Book Date. Remember to link your post and share it with your fellow bloggers. Remember we need to take over Mondays and for that we need to stand together and build an army.....!

Enjoy your week and happy reading!

  1. I'm starting to use the calendar for Netgalley and ARC reviews and yes - it does help! I've only read Big Little Lies and Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty, both definitely worth the trouble.

    Thanks for stopping by Kathy!

  2. Actually, I really like Mondays. Mondays are a blank slate for the week. But I do work at home, so that changes things a little.

I don't think I've read an Afrikaans book, but both sound good. I'll have to keep an eye out for Weeping Water. Have a good week!

    1. Hi Katherine! Arikaans is actually such an easy language to learn. Luckily there are many, many good Afrikaans books that have been translated. Weeping Waters is definitely one of them.

Thanks for stopping by and have a good week!

  3. Let's start a petition to have three day weekends and then Monday will be in with the Happy Days. Maybe Monday could be the work at home day, like enrichment.

Oh I do like this idea.

    1. Now that is such a good idea. You will definitely be one of my trusted advisers when readers take over the world with me as president. Oh gosh no..... That sounds like Designated Survivor.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  4. Hello again! The world would be a better place if we all just spent Mondays reading. Glad you liked Truly Madly guilty. I did too although I liked Big Little Lies even more. Have you read that one?

    1. You are definitely not the only one on the planet who hasn't read Truly Madly Guilty! I am the only one in my Book Club and of all my friends who have read it.

Looking forward to spending more time with Leaving Time.

  6. My Cousin Rachel is a page turner. I think the older edition will make it even more so.

Summer vacation has begun and so has the extreme heat. Come see what I'm reading.

    1. Mondays must be spend reading - especially when it is too cold (like today) or to hot.

I've only read two of Leane Moriarty's books, but will read the rest as well and wait for a new release! I quite enjoy her writing style.

  8. I need to get to American Gods as well. It's been on my wishlist for so long and now I want to watch the new series.

    Happy Reading!

    1. Same here! But I don't want to even mention the series to my husband before I haven't read the book.

  9. I'm feeling so overwhelmed by my TBR pile at the moment, too many from the library that I need to return, so MUST READ QUICKLY. I need a reading break...too much work. Oh well!

I've read Truly Madly Guilty, but it wasn't my favourite of Liane Moriarty's. Could have been 100 pages shorter. But enjoyable. And you've inspired me to try Hushed, I keep hearing about it. Enjoy your week. Lovely post.

    1. Thank you Bev! I've only read Big Little Lies as well and yes - I did enjoy it a bit more. But Truly Madly Guilty was REALLY like a therapy session!

Aaah - good luck with the TBR list. I know - it's like a monster that just keeps on growing! (Maybe because we keep on feeding it)
