Friday Meets - 26 August 2016

Am I the only one who feels like that? Not complaining at all - just sharing.

Meet me on Friday @ Friday 56 for a bit of Book Blogger Hop to kick-start the weekend with Book Beginnings.

Friday 56 is hosted by Freda's Voice. For this date, you will need the following:
  •  Grab a book (Yes, any book. But it might get you to your other Friday activities a bit quicker if you just grab the book you are currently reading)
  • Turn to page 56 or 56% on your e-reader
  • Find a sentence or two (your other Friday activities might determine this)
  • Post it!
  • Remember to post your link on Freda's Voice and to visit the other guys in the linky.
  • And don't forget to list the title of the book and the author as well.
(With one click on the covers, you will be transported to the magical world of Goodreads)

After requesting a book from Netgalley and it got DENIED (*gasp*), I visited my Netgalley profile and realized that my feedback ratio is only 40% (*gasp*). How is that possible?? I've only requested 3 books so far and two are read and reviewed. Looking at my shelf, I saw that I've actually received 5 books from Netgalley (huh?) - and then I remembered.... It was a night, long gone by (at least a month), the movie was boring, the wine was delicious and I was browsing Netgalley. THAT's how this book ended up on my shelf. Forgotten. Ruining my feedback ratio. Being published on Tuesday. Yes, THIS Tuesday.

 56%:
"There, on the telephone, in a heated conversation, was Lieutenant Colonel Folsom again, crossing my path: first, dressing me down in front of Omar Bradley on that dusty parade ground in Louisiana, then handing me a promotion to captain without even looking at me, finally, sending us across the channel to man the Red Ball Express. Now he was the officer I'd have to report black marketeering to."

So far, there are only 2 ratings on Goodreads and NO reviews. No pressure. No, not at all. I'm actually only at 9% (of 426 pages) and I'm still hoping and praying that this book will grasp my attention and I'll just fly through the pages.... Luckily, it's not bad at all and the Blurb is enticing:
After being blacklisted for having communist sympathies as a student twenty years before, Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Tom Wrought escapes America’s Cold War climate to teach at Oxford. There, he falls in love with Liz Spencer, a beautiful married woman. When Liz’s husband is pushed in front of a train in the London Underground, Tom is immediately arrested for the murder. Scotland Yard is convinced it has its man, as he had means, motive, and opportunity.
Certain of his innocence, Liz hires a young solicitor, Alice Silverstone, to defend Tom. But they discover that Tom’s former secret work as an American spy made him a number of powerful enemies. Russian intelligence, British counterespionage, and even the FBI all may have reason to frame him. If Liz and Alice can find out who is behind the murder, they stand a chance of freeing Tom, but doing so puts all their lives at risk. Goodreads

Lets join Gilion @ Rose City Reader now for Book Beginnings. Share the first sentence or so of the book you are reading (or just take the one you grabbed for Friday 56) and share it. You are welcome to also post your initial thoughts on the sentence and your first impressions of the book. Remember to also post your link to Rose City Reader and to visit the other City Readers! If you use another book as the one used for Friday 56, remember to include the title and author.

Definitely no time to pick another book for Book Beginnings! It has to be Autumn in Oxford as well.

Opening sentence(s):
At 3:00 Tom Wrought left college for London. He was to meet his lover, Liz Spencer, at the Gresham House, a shabby hotel in Bloomsbury.
I like that the story "opens" immediately. Not too many introductions. It might read a bit like a court file though. BUT I strongly suspect that it is precisely the idea.

Book Blogger Hop
As always, I will also be joining the Book Blogger Hop hosted by Ramblings of a coffee addicted writer. Every week they will pop a question that you need to answer. Post your answer to your blog, enter your post to the linky provided, make yourself a cup of coffee and go visit the other blogs in the list.

Today's questions: Can you say this sentence describes you (example): READING IS MY PASSION.

My answer:   I know how to read and I'm not afraid to use it

Thalk to me!

What are you reading over the weekend?
What sentence best describes you?

  1. Hi Mareli. Great opening meme - love it! And this book looks good too. May the pages fly by. I too have been denied on Netgalley before. Usually only when I REALLY want the book desperately! Happy reading and thanks for the visit.

    1. Hi Bev! Thanks! I've actually made that meme myself. Whoo hoo! I am still reading the Netgalley book, will hopefully get to review it in time... hope you had a great weekend!

  2. It's so easy to let NetGalley requests to get out of hand. Half the time I have no idea how many of my requests are actually pending. I wish there was an option to see what we've requested, it would help in deciding if I should request more books. Hope you enjoy!

    1. Hi Alicia! I've tried to control it so well so far, but even that doesn't seem to help much...!! Will finish this one, review it and just start all over again!! Hope your weekend was AWESOME.
